IP over Optics: Performance Modelling of Optical Shared Protection Rings
نویسندگان
چکیده
During the last decade, we have witnessed an enormous growth in Internet traffic. Different technologies have been developed since, in order to cope with the capacity and QoS demands this imposes. A clear example would be ATM, capable of achieving several Mbits/s and providing quality of service assurances. However, the deployment of ATM has been slow and some would say, will never be complete, mainly due to expensive equipment and the lack of ATM native applications.

Assessment of IP Network Interruptions on End-System Applications
This article intends to p rovide a quantitative a ssessment of the performance of adaptive and nonadaptive applications when carried over an optical backbone network. Specifically, the study examines the impact of protection at t he optical l ayer, focusing on Optical Shared Protection Rings for the transport of IP based premium services. Using entropy as a measure of disruption in the network,...
متن کاملProtection and Restoration in DWDM Networks: Recent Developments and Issues
Protection using rings has been the common method of reducing downtime on SONET/SDH based telecommunication networks. With the trend towards IP over DWDM, there is a need for IP based protection and restoration mechanisms. In this paper, the mechanisms being developed at several standards organizations including OIF, IETF, and ITU are described. These mechanisms are in some sense more powerful ...
متن کاملDynamic lightpath provisioning with signal quality guarantees in survivable translucent optical networks.
This paper studies the problem of signal-quality-guaranteed lightpath provisioning in survivable translucent optical networks under dynamic traffic. A new protection scheme, called regeneration-segment protection (RSP), is proposed. Provisioning approaches with shared path protection and shared RSP are presented. Two main signal quality constraints are integrated with the provisioning problem. ...
متن کاملImproving the Triple Coupled Ring-Resonator Performance as an Optical Filter
In this paper, a three ring-resonator serially coupled is considered as an optical filter. We are going to improve the performance of the designed optical filter by increasing the quality factor and finesse of filtered wavelengths. The first and last rings are coupled to the bus waveguides that carry the input and output fields. The effect of coupling parameters and ring radii on the filtering ...
متن کاملSpare Capacity Modelling and Its Applications in Survivable Ip-over-optical Networks
As the interest in IP-over-optical networks are becoming the preferred core network architecture, survivability has emerged as a major concern for network service providers; a result of the potentially huge traffic volumes that will be supported by optical infrastructure. Therefore, implementing recovery strategies is critical. In addition to the traditional recovery schemes based around protec...
